The Psychiatry Department encourages participation of MD residents in a number of activities at the following four levels:
1. Academic activities
2. Community activities
3. IPD Learning and wards
4. OPD learning
1. Academic activities: Students of Part 1 and 2 are exposed to departmental sessions based on the curriculum.

Departmental Sessions- Combination of prescribed and Innovative teaching methods
Innovative teaching methods like Case-based learning, Audio-visual, Role play, debates, etc. are incorporated along with the prescribed learning methods. Students learn from a variety of case experiences and keep in touch with the recent advances in the field of research in Psychiatry

MD Psychiatry Resident as a Teacher
As a part of training, MD residents are guided and trained to give lectures at UG Homoeopathic College
2. Community Activities: Residents are exposed to the community for identification of Mental Health issues at all the levels e.g. School, College (Junior/ Senior), teachers of school and colleges and other community stake holders like industrial workers / officers etc. Some of these activities have been/are the following:

Extra Mural Research on Role of Homoeopathy in Scholastic difficulties in children studying in vernacular medium- A multi- Centric study

A study conducted by the Department of Psychiatry in collaboration with Department of Nephrology on Assessing the mental health status of the care-givers of CKD patients on haemodialysis

Projects addressing the mental health of residents of Old Age Homes

Activities addressing nearby College Students
The Psychiatry department conducts various activities for the students of the nearby colleges helping in the identification and management of their mental health issues through counselling and use of homoeopathy. The MD residents are actively involves in discharging these activities.

Community Education activities
Students participate in community education through public campaigns through street plays and public lectures to observe significant national/international days like Women’s day, Drug addiction week, etc
3. IPD Learning and Wards: Psychiatry department is recognized as” Center of Excellence” by the Ministry of AYUSH since 2016. Residents are trained with hands–on experience of varied clinical psychiatry conditions treated homoeopathically in the specifically designed ‘Anukampa’ ward( Psychiatry ward) and Geriatric ward.

Psychiatry ward- Anukampa
The psychiatry IPD is a special unit to cater to psychiatry patients requiring hospital admission. Acute psychiatric emergencies like Alcohol withdrawal syndrome, Panic attacks, conversion reaction, mania, etc, are managed homoeopathically. Chronic cases requiring long terms addmission like patients with Schizophrenia, Substance use disorder, Neurocognitive disorders (dementia), etc. are managed with Homoeopathy and rehabilitation measures. MD residents get the opportunity to learn from a variety of psychiatry cases in the ward

Geriatric Ward ( Prof. Ram Kapse’s Geriatric Care Center)
The Geriatric Ward caters to elderly patients requiring medical management and nursing care. The residents posted in psychiatry ipd also get a good learning from the geriatric ward.

Alcohol De-addiction Treatment
Alcohol De-addiction is done through Homoeopathic treatment majorly at IPD level. The patients are medically managed with Homoeopathic medicines and are subjected to rehabilitation with the involvement of MD residents. An ‘Alchohol Anonymous; meeting is held every Sunday in the hospital premises.

IPD training programme
Residents of psychiatry as well as non-psychiatric departments posted in these wards are trained by the Psychiatry faculty for 3 months based on a specially designed programme.
4. OPD learning: The psychiatry OPD runs from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4 pm. There are some special psychiatry OPDs too.

Psychiatry OPD
The OPDs cater to all childhood, adult and elderly psychiatric cases. The OPDs are managed by the supervisors and consultants. Students are exposed to psychiatric case receiving, case taking and homoeopathic management

Sexual OPD
A special opd is available for patients with sexual dysfunction and other sexual issues.

Child Psychiatry OPD
A special opd is available for children with developmental and other psychiatric conditions
